In the blistering heat of summer these are heaven sent to keep your house cool, and they use about one half of the energy of conventional ovens. You can save more if you cook things faster by cutting the food into slices and placing them at the outer rim of the plate. Smaller portions heat faster as well. Also, the Geek just learned if your potato chips go stale, put some in a bowl and nuke 'em for about 5 seconds - crunchy again!
- Stoves! Gas stoves with an electric ignition are the best. No more wasted energy and added heat with a pilot light. To save energy try not to open the oven door too many times while baking, also clean the burners and reflectors so the heat is reflected properly. A Geek fun fact: cold water heats faster than hot - so fill the pasta pot with cold water!
- Pressure cookers! These babies use 50-75% LESS energy than regular cookware.
- Induction cooking ovens!Theses are great! They use 90% of their energy, unlike the 55% gas ones do. It works using induction coils that generate a magnetic field that induces heat on the steal pots placed on top of it. Pots must be made of steel and your kitchen has to be specially wired for 220 volts.
- Solar cookers! Use the sun to do all the cooking that's 100% free. there are
solar ovens, solar cookers, and solar panel cookers.
