Car Energy Saving Tips

Here's some car energy saving tips. It's everything your parents told you when you were learning to drive and a little more.

  • Drive slower! Simple enough, eh? Each 5 mph you drive over 60mph is an additional $0.25 per gallon for gas.
  • Don't drive crazy! Aggressive stops and starts eats more gas. Anticipate the bends and ease into them. Slow down for yellow lights instead of trying to beat it.
  • Lose weight! You and your car. Less weight mean more mile for your buck.
  • Fill up on COLD days! The colder the ground temperature the denser the gas liquid. Basic physics - things expand when they get hotter.
  • Pump gas SLOWLY! Set the nozzle on slow mode not fast. In fast mode some of the gas becomes vapor and goes BACK into the gas pump storage tank. You just paid to fill the gas station's tank!!
  • Fill up when on half tank! Gas evaporates quickly. The less air occupying the tank the less evaporation.
  • Fuel truck pumping... go to another station. You get cleaner gas that way. Gas just pumped into the stations storage tanks stirs up all the dirt that settles to them bottom normally.
  • Lose the roof rack! The rack itself, even when not carrying anything, causes drag on the car. A fully loaded one causes 5% decrease in your fuel economy.
  • Use higher gears! The higher the gear the less gas used. Take it up to 5th gear, granny!
  • Use cruise control! This helps the Geek's lead foot from going over 65 and eating more gas.
  • Carpooling! What better way to save money and help the ozone?
  • Buried in the snow? The best way to warm up you car is to DRIVE it. 30 seconds is plenty for the engine. Any more idling is a waste of gas.
  • Open a window! Use the AC when you absolutely have to.
  • Make an errand list! Hit them all at once, instead of a bunch of back and fourths to your house.
  • Hybrid car or electric car!
  • If you're driving an old klunker, even a more efficient gas fueled car saves you money.

  • Take the train! Use the subway just once a week. Try it out and see how much you save on gas.
